What Tools You Need to Patch Drywall (Beginner's Kit)

A clean drywall patch doesn't need a truck full of gear — just six tools that get the job done every time.

Almost every homeowner I help in Bothell or Kirkland already owns half the tools they need. The other half costs under $40 total and lives in one shallow drawer forever.

Start with a 6" putty knife for filling and a 10" or 12" taping knife for the finish pass. The wider knife is the difference between a patch that disappears and one that telegraphs through paint. Add a hawk or a small mud pan so you're not scooping out of the bucket.

For the patch itself: a piece of scrap drywall, a roll of self-adhesive mesh tape, and a small tub of pre-mixed lightweight joint compound for small holes (under a fist). For anything larger I switch to a bag of 20-minute setting compound — it dries hard, sands clean, and doesn't shrink the way pre-mix does.

Finish the kit with a sanding sponge (fine/medium combo), a dust mask, and a small spray bottle of water to thin compound for the final skim. That's it — six items and you can handle anything short of a full sheet replacement.
