Screws vs Nails: When Each One Wins

Pros use both because they do different jobs. Substituting one for the other is one of the most common DIY mistakes.

Nails are stronger in shear (resistance to side-to-side load) — they bend rather than break. That's why framing, joist hangers, and structural connections use nails. A house frame held together with deck screws would split apart in a moderate windstorm because screws snap clean under sudden shear load.

Screws are stronger in tension (resistance to pull-out). That's why decking, cabinetry, drywall, and anything that needs to come apart later uses screws. They also let you tighten a connection over time and don't require pounding (which matters in finish work).

Construction screws (GRK, SPAX, structural screws) blur the line — they're rated for both shear and tension and can substitute for nails in many applications. Read the box; don't assume.

Common mistake I see: drywall screws used for framing or decking. Drywall screws are brittle by design (they need to snap to depth in a drywall gun) and will fail under load. Use them only for drywall.
