How to Stop a Door From Slamming

Slamming doors crack drywall, scare kids, and wake the household. Three simple fixes handle every cause I see.

Doors slam for one of three reasons: draft from an HVAC vent or open window, a heavy door + spring hinge, or kids in a hurry. Each has its own fix.

For drafts, the cheapest fix is a felt-pad door silencer that sticks to the latch plate ($5 for a 12-pack). It softens the strike and quiets the close without changing the door's swing. For Pacific Northwest homes with leaky old windows, also check that the bedroom door isn't being pulled shut by furnace airflow — a small wedge or door stay fixes it instantly.

For heavy doors (typical solid-core interiors), install a pneumatic door closer — about $25, surface-mounted in 15 minutes, and adjustable for both speed and final latch force. Hidden soft-close hinges are nicer-looking but cost $40–60/pair and need precise mortising.

For exterior doors, a hydraulic closer like you'd see on a commercial door is overkill at home. A simple chain-driven storm door closer or a $15 door damper does the trick.
