How to Tighten a Loose Door Knob

A wobbly door knob takes 60 seconds to fix with the right Phillips screwdriver — once you find the hidden set screw.

Most interior knobs have two visible screws on the inside rose plate. Tighten both and 80% of wobbles are gone. If the rose plate itself spins, look for a tiny slot or hole on the side — slide a flathead in, press, and the rose pops off to reveal the mounting screws beneath.

Modern Schlage and Kwikset knobs hide the screws under a snap-on rose. A thin putty knife or fingernail in the seam pops it off. Tighten the now-exposed Phillips screws and snap the rose back on.

If tightening doesn't help, the screws have stripped the door. Pull the knob, pack the screw holes with toothpicks and wood glue, let dry, and reinstall.

Lever-style handles loosen faster than round knobs because of the leverage. Check them once a year and add a drop of blue Loctite to the screws if they keep working loose.
